Design of Concrete Structures with Advanced Methods

On 24th and 25th of October 2013 a two-days course entitled "Model Code 2013 – Design of Concrete Structures with Advanced Methods" took place in Vienna.

The course was organized by Smart Minerals GmbH (SMG) in cooperation with the International Federation for Structural Concrete (fib). Smart Minerals was founded as a spin-off by the Vienna University of Technology and the cement industry in January 2013. It is the first cooperation between Business and Science in Austria. One of its aims is to realize projects in which companies and scientific institutes conduct research of internationally competitive quality. Furthermore, it has an accredited laboratory for testing the materials concrete, cement and minerals. The combination of concrete material and construction research at that location  provided an excellent basis for teaching the fib-Model Code 2010 scientific models and applications just there. The seminar was well attended, with a balanced participation of the building industry, civil engineers, building owners, construction companies and researchers.

The program was well concerted with interesting presentations, starting with the history of the Model Code as a basis for the Eurocode, and continuing with Materials, Fiber Reinforced Concrete, Conceptual Design, Shear and Punching, Interface Characteristics, Serviceability, Behaviour under Special Loads, Numerical Analysis, Verification by Testing and ending with fruitful and stimulating discussions on these topics. During this seminar the audience noticed, how important it is to regard civil engineering developments from an international point of view. It is important to discuss several approaches and reach a common goal.

There was a good atmosphere and all speakers and participants enjoyed also the social events and the dinner embellished by citter music.
